Field Experience Journal #3
What a joyous occasion, Mr. Roehlke and I are granted the opportunity to guide Mr. Broze’s 7th grade Geography class for the first time. All in all, I think it went very well. Mr. Roehlke and I observed Mr. Broze while he conducted the review game during the first class. The class was split into two groups where they would be asked a question, going in order by seat, if the student could not compose an answer, the question would go to the other group. We then took over and conducted the review game ourselves. This was quite entertaining. The students showed promise during the game. The majority of the students would be able to answer the question as well as give an example or go into further detail. If a student did not understand or know the answer to the question Mr. Roehlke and I would help by using guiding questions. On one occasion, I made the connection between the domestication, being the vocabulary word, of the student’s pets and the domestication of plants and animals. The plants and animals, similar to their pets, depended on human interaction for their survival. We used a discussion and collaborative learning teaching strategy. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was intentional but when students were not able to answer the question their respective teams would confer together and figure it out together. Modification of this strategy is a possibility depending on the lesson. Being a game oriented lesson, the students would at times get side tracked by the competition aspect. Even with this said Mr. Roehlke and I could easily regain the student’s attention. This would be done by calling out to the group to listen up since this will be extremely helpful when it comes to taking the test. At the end of the class we “exchanged” notes with the students. They received a study guide and we were given the notes they composed during the lesson. By doing this we could see if the students understood the material as well as being attentive.
